The vast majority of the population in Zambia is under the age of 24 due to the prevalence of HIV and AIDS. Over 1.2 million people are currently living with HIV or AIDS in Zambia. 64% of the Zambian population lives on $1 a day or less. 40% do not have access to clean drinking water and 90% of rural women cannot read.
The average child attends school for just 7 years. Government schools are often overcrowded with a 48:1 teacher/student ratio. At the end of 7th grade, children must pass an exam to continue to 8th grade. Sadly, only 33% of the children pass this exam. Our Foundation sponsors young children to attend small independent schools from pre-school through seventh grade. Our goal is to have 100% of our sponsored students pass the 7th grade exam and move on to 8th grade.
In South Africa, we are funding a Learning Hub in Ysterplaat, near Cape Town. This is a very impoverished area with gang violence where pre-school children stay in "Creches" (homes) all day while their parents' work. Often there are 30 young children in one room just watching television. We are providing kits with 82 lesson plans and training the Caregivers, providing them with pre-school teaching certifications. Overall, we are funding enough kits to teach 420 children in this very needy area.
Your donations will truly make a big difference. Every donation, no matter what size, will help the children of Zambia and South Africa.
